I’m a little late in posting this, but forgive me; I am elbows deep in boxes, packing peanuts are clinging to my hair with superpowered static electricity, and my mind is somewhere with the Sharpie marker I can never find.
Moving is harder than keeping a three year old from toppling over the box full of vases, which has thus far proved to be impossible. Luckily, I randomly remembered to use random.org and pull a winner!
And the winner is…
Leisha, I’ll be emailing you right away (before I forget!) and you will have 48 hours to get back to me or I’ll draw again. Though lets be honest, given my present circumstances of packing tape stuck between fingers, I’m likely to be a little lenient on the whole 48 hour deal. Congrats, Leisha!
Are your kids crazy about the Discovery Gateway Museum? My kids love it there! I love it because it’s a totally hands-on, educational play place where your kids are encouraged to touch and explore everything.
This week, I had the opportunity to see a sneak peek of Discovery Gateway Museum’s newest installation. Discovery Gateway has created an amazing Primary Children’s Hospital Emergency Department exhibit, including the beloved Life Flight helicopter!
The entire exhibit is designed to encourage kids to go through the entire hospital experience. Your child can man the Life Flight control tower, play pilot and pick up a patient (a “radio” gives the scenario–one of a number of common childhood accidents–and how to best care for the patient), practice checking in patients, dress up as the doctor, ‘xray’ bones, and even scrub up for surgery!
Surgery? Oh yes! Discovery Gateway has teamed with some amazing developers to create a one-of-a-kind iPad app so your child can preform several different surgeries over a pretend patient! (They are hoping to put this on the App Store soon!)
If your child has a scheduled hospital visit, is frequently sick, or just a bit on the clumsy side, this exhibit is a perfect way to act out any fears or concerns your child may have!
I was happy to hear that the museum is accommodating towards both public and home school field trips. Lesson plans will be available online soon for teachers/parents who want to get the most out of their trip to the museum.
This Saturday, the brand new exhibit will be fully up and running. In celebration of the museum’s 35th anniversary, tickets will be on sale for their 35th anniversary this Saturday for only $3.50 per person! In addition, their memberships will be on sale both at the museum and online for $35 off the cost of membership! The museum will open early for members (9 a.m.) and 11 a.m. for nonmembers. For more information, call the museum at (801) 456-5437 or visit DiscoveryGateway.org!
Additionally, I am giving away a family pass to Discovery Gateway!
Once Upon a Baby: A Tale of Adoption by Shari Guess
A heartwarming tale of LDS Adoption. Follow a child’s journey from the Pre-existence to his family’s home on Earth. The divine guidance of the Savior, along with the love and prayers of both birth and adoptive parents are gently and lovingly portrayed in this tender story of the ultimate “Happily ever after”.
I am so excited to be invited along this ‘book tour,’ as adoption is something that is very close to my heart. I have two neices and one nephew who were adopted through foster care, and my parents are working to adopt through foster care as well.
The book is written from an LDS perspective (premortal life, eternal families) for children who were placed into adoption by their birth mothers. It sweetly explains how the mother and father promised the child in the pre-existence that they would be a family forever. They prayed for their child, but eventually learned that the mommy would not be able to grow the baby.
While the majority of the book was appropriately simplified for children, this line seemed to over simplify the role of the birth mother:
The baby would need a Tummy Mommy!
Tummy Mommies are blessing mommies.
They help mommies and daddies
who can’t grow babies
by growing a baby for them.
A very young child may appreciate the simplicity of this explanation, but to me it raises quite a few questions on its own. For an older child, the explanation may even feel dishonest; the “tummy mommy” didn’t grow a baby for the adoptive parents, but decided it was in her child’s best interest to let someone else raise the child. It feels here like the birth mother is hidden behind trite excuses rather than celebrating her selfless act of love.
If you’ve been looking for a good LDS book with a focus on eternal families, but don’t care for the surrogate-like interpretation, I would simply pause at this point in the book and adapt as is appropriate for your situation; perhaps telling your child how his birth mother wasn’t able to care for a baby, but she loved the baby and wanted to find the perfect family for your child. (Read this article for more ideas.)
Overall, the theme of the book was lovely, and clearly created with a special heart for adoption. It’s a rare find, especially with the family in the story ultimately going to the temple to be sealed together forever.

Awhile back, Nicole from My Everything Else did a guest post on my blog called “How to Find Your Mommy Mojo.” She is so passionate about finding yourself within motherhood that she has created a new site that I’m so excited about called “MOMentity.” The site features six Mommy Resolutions to help you become a Mother of Magnitude.
Today she had an official launch party, which I was lucky enough to be a part of. Watch the video of the party here. You’ll want to do this because she is giving away some fabulous prizes. She has a jewelry line with hand stamped jewelry featuring the MOMentity resolutions; my favorite is stamped with the words “I Am Valuable.” She’ll be giving away two necklaces, and I’m giving away an FHE Made Easy packet. You just need to watch the video to grab the secret words to comment on her post here!
There will also be plenty more giveaways throughout the month on her blog, as well as regular articles on finding happiness in motherhood. If you struggle, as I do, to find joy in being a mommy each day, this is definitely a site you’re going to want to keep an eye on. MOMentity also has a Facebook page, a Google+ page, and you can follow her on Twitter as well!
