This is such a fun time to talk to your children about Joseph Smith receiving the Golden Plates. Little kids will be amazed by the story of the angel coming to Joseph to tell him about the plates. A super adorable (way beyond Slacker Mom capability) family home evening would be to hide a Book of Mormon somewhere on a hill–or in your backyard–and have a treasure hunt! You could tie in the story of the Golden Plates, obviously, and how they became the Book of Mormon. You could talk about how the Book of Mormon is a real treasure! {Of course, if you have older kids, they’ll be expecting a prize too! Dessert perhaps? Or their own copy of the Book of Mormon, if they don’t have one yet!}

A great way to introduce the story of Joseph Smith receiving the Golden Plates is using the children’s Doctrine and Covenants Stories. If you don’t have the book, you can just watch the movie at lds.org! I think it would be fun to print out the story from the Doctrine & Covenants, cut out each picture with the caption, and staple it together like a mini book. (Ooh! Then take it to church on Sunday, too!) If you are a Super Mom, you could cover it with some cardboard wrapped in gold tin foil and write “Golden Plates” on the front. That’s not happening here at my house, but there’s a free idea for someone with more energy than myself!

The secular focus of the week is G for Gardens. There are some super fun activities in the Walk Beside Me LDS Preschool schedule! For a sensory bin, you could give your child some fresh dirt, seeds, and a shovel! My kids are all about the watering bucket, which you can find at a dollar store in the Spring and Summer. Rather than placing your sensory bin in your reusable tote, you could give them their own little planter to start a garden.
